Turnkey hoist refurbishment for improved ship unloader reliability

The Stage 1 Ship Unloader at RTA Yarwun used a proprietary hoisting system for the main grab, but its variable-speed drives had become obsolete. These needed to be upgraded to match the capability and reliability of the newly installed Stage 2 ship unloader.

Welcon Technologies was engaged to deliver the project under a turnkey contract.

Work began with the Define Stage, focusing on scope development to confirm project requirements. A Pre-Feasibility Stage followed, producing Scope of Work documentation, schedules, and cost estimates.

During this process, it was determined that the upgrade would require a major lift using a floating crane, prompting the development of a detailed Lift Plan.
Once funding was approved, Welcon proceeded with the full implementation—completing detailed design, construction, commissioning, and final project close-out.

About the Yarwun Plant

The Yarwun refinery is a major processing facility located at Fisherman’s Landing, Gladstone, QLD.

It plays a critical role in the import and handling of bulk raw materials, which are unloaded, refined, and processed for downstream production. Maintaining the ship unloaders in peak condition is vital to the plant’s overall throughput and efficiency.
