Project Overview
A long-standing water corporation client, enlisted SAFEgroup Automation (SGA) to explore the capabilities of Schneider Electric’s SCADAPack 47xi as part of
their RTU modernisation program.
They wanted to explore how the 47xi’s Linuxbased processor could enhance their RTU operations.
SGA developed a wireless Web HMI that enables operators to securely connect via local Wi-Fi using smart devices, providing real-time access to system data, alarms, and controls. This solution transforms their ability to monitor and control systems in the field, offering greater flexibility than traditional SCADA/HMI systems, while reducing the reliance on fixed hardware.
Unlike traditional RTUs, the SCADAPack 47xi is more than just an upgrade—it’s a platform for unlocking new possibilities. Its enhanced processing power and webbased capabilities allow you to integrate cutting-edge technologies, such as predictive maintenance, IoT sensors, and advanced data analytics.

The Client
Guided by the trust built through a long-term Partnership
This long-standing client of SGA provides water and wastewater services to a population of 135,000 in 54 towns who are connected to 37 water supply systems and 26 wastewater management facilities.
As part of their RTU upgrade planning, SGA was engaged to explore the potential of the co-processor embedded within the 47xi variant.
Guided by the trust built through a long-term partnership, SGA employed agile development methodologies to research and develop the product capabilities.
The Outcome
What did we deliver
Leveraging the SCADAPack 47xi’s Linux-based processor, SGA delivered a wireless Web HMI for on-site commissioning and
troubleshooting.
With Wi-Fi connectivity, operators can securely connect, monitor and control any local RTUs via their smart devices, offering all of the benefits of a traditional SCADA system, but with greater flexibility.
With this solution, our client now has…
- Flexibility by eliminating on-site HMI hardware, allowing secure web access via mobile devices, improving commissioning and troubleshooting efficiency.
- Remote management of RTU and HMI configurations, simplifying maintenance and downloads through Geo SCADA.
How was it done?
- Creating a Mobile-Friendly Interface: SGA used Node-RED with UIBuilder and Vue3 to develop an intuitive web HMI, allowing operators to access real-time data, alarms, and system statuses from any smart device.
- Using Local Wi-Fi for Connectivity: The SCADAPack 47xi’s local Wi-Fi connectivity allows operators to easily connect with smart devices, enabling real-time monitoring and control directly in the field, without needing dedicated hardware.
- SCADA System Compatibility: This solution was implemented at one of the client’s sites to confirm functionality with their existing SCADA systems. It successfully maintained all of the control and monitoring capabilities operators are familiar with, but with added mobility and flexibility, enhancing field operations. The seamless integration with the client’s existing infrastructure ensured minimal disruption, which is highly promising for future implementations across other sites.
- Rapid Prototyping with Node-RED: Node-RED allowed for quick prototyping and iteration of the HMI, enabling independent development from the RTU and ensuring the solution met operational needs efficiently.
So What Does This Mean?
The release of the SCADAPack 47xi by Schneider Electric marks a significant shift in the capabilities of traditional SCADA systems. With the introduction of a Linux-based application processor, this RTU brings greater flexibility, adaptability, and processing power to field operations.
This shift towards dynamic, software-driven, and mobile-friendly SCADA systems will reduce hardware costs, improve scalability, enable real-time decision-making, and allow for faster responses to system issues.
The Integrated Web HMI developed by SGA is only one example of how the SCADAPack 47xi co-processor can be used, and we welcome the opportunity to further contribute to the innovation and practical application of this product for industrial clients.
