End-to-end E&I design for 1MW geothermal pilot

Our Team supported the 1MW Habanero Pilot Power Plant at Innamincka, SA, delivering a $1M Electrical & Instrumentation scope for a geothermal pilot drawing heat from ~4 km underground in the Cooper Basin. We provided the design, specifications and commissioning support needed to prove the process of transporting geothermal heat to surface to generate electricity.

Result: a validated, zero-carbon baseload generation pilot with robust controls and power systems.

The plant demonstrates closed-loop geothermal power generation. Water is pumped at high pressure into deep granite fractures, acting as a vast heat exchanger. The heated water is brought to the surface where its heat is extracted to produce electricity, then the fluid is recirculated underground to sustain the cycle.

As a geothermal system, it offers the promise of reliable, round-the-clock, zero-carbon baseload energy.

Services:

  • Detailed HV and LV electrical design
  • Instrumentation design and selection
  • Control system strategy
  • E, I & C construction drawings and installation specifications
  • Electrical and instrumentation procurement specifications
  • Power system modelling
  • Protection relay settings
  • Lightning risk assessment
  • FATs, E&I testing/commissioning

Delivery Method:

  • Design Consultant for the constructor (Electrical & Instrumentation)

The pilot successfully proved the geothermal concept and generated electricity as intended. Our Team’s E&I designs, specifications and commissioning support enabled safe, reliable operation, giving the client confidence in a scalable, low-emissions baseload technology.
